Further information about current Groups
1st Helston

Registration Number: 31439 / Reg Charity Number: 308208
A red Diamond shaped Group Badge of Helston 60 Years was worn on the rear of Scarf. Whilst the Group is recored as being opened on 09/07/1954, we know this to be incorrect. On 03/10/09, a conversation was had between the CC and a gentleman by the name of Henry Williams, who is currently 76. This gentleman stated that he was in the 1st Helston Scout group, under the leadership of SM Harrington. During 1947 he was on of four Scouts who were selected to be part of the Cornish Unit to the World Jamboree. The other scouts being John Williams (No relation), Phillip Harrington (Son of SM) and Dick Rogers. He states that a boat was chartered and went accross the English Channel to Dieppe, and that a circular railway ran around the Jamboree site. If this is correct, this shows that the Scout Group was running at least seven years before it was registered. Details of the 1947 Jamboree are as follows:
6th World Scout Jamboree – 1947
Jamboree of Peace", Moisson, France, 1947. The Jamboree took place from August 9 to 16 inclusive and 24,152 Scouts were present. Ten years since the last Jamboree, and B-P had died in 1941. Loudspeakers were an unpleasant innovation of the time. Indian Scouts celebrated their country's independence. "Challenges" were part of the programme. The final march, in the formation of a Carrick Bend (the symbol of the Jamboree). At the opening ceremony Scouts marched in by countries; at the closing ceremony each sub-camp formed the unit, and bore at its head the many flags and banners of the Scouts of all the countries represented in the sub-camp. . Of the total number 15000 were French-Great Britain’s delegation was second largest, Belgium third, The United States fourth, Holland fifth, and Czechoslovakia 6th. 3000 French Rover Scouts and 2400 French Girl Guides and Lady Cub Masters aided in handling Jamboree activities. All construction and service operations were conducted by Scouts and Girl Guides-for instance- the phone exchanges-electrical equipment- railroad depot etc. Rovers, Girl Guides and others participating in these services paid the regular Jamboree fee. Girl Guides and Lady Cub Masters were quartered in a camp of their own outside the Jamboree ground proper. The Jamboree grounds occupied approximately 1500 acres and were located on a bend of the Seine River about 40 miles North West of Paris. The grounds on the private estate of a wealthy Sugar manufacturer. Nearby was Saint Andre where the American Forces first crossed the Seine in World War #2. The Castle in which Field Marshal Rommel lived during the German occupation stood out prominently on the opposite side of the river. The camp was divided into 15 Sub-Camps with 7 camp annexes.
