The Camel Run
"The Camel Run" is an event run by Bodmin District Scouts. It is an incident hike which is run at night. The teams of Scouts & Explorers Scouts have to navigate their way on footpaths and byroads to various bases, manned by leaders and volunteers.
At each based the teams have to complete a number of scouting skills for which they are awarded points depending on how well they complete the task.

The groups within the District take it in turns to organise the event each year.  This year is was organised by 1st Castle Canyke Scout Group from Bodmin.
This year is the 100 years of when "Scouting for Boys" is published of the book. The incidents were based on the Campfire Yarn chapters in the book.

The bases were

Campfire Yarn no 1 - "Kim Games" using 25 items of camping equipment
Campfire Yarn no 2 + 3 - Build and light a fire and the Scout Law/Promise
Campfire Yarn no 4 - Blindfolded Minefield Challenge
Campfire Yarn no 5 - Maps symbols, grid references, bearings and the phonetic alphabet
Campfire Yarn no 7 - Semaphore

Campfire Yarn no 20,21,22 - Jousting ring challenge in the "Order of the Round Table"
Campfire Yarn no 23,24,25 - First Aid challenges

The teams set out at 15 minute intervals to navigate a course that would take them to the bases. The first of the 15 teams set out at 19.30 with final team going at 21.00.
Over 80 young people took part in the event. All but 2 teams completed the event with the last team arriving back at 6.00. The scout teams covered a distance of 11 miles with the explorers covering 15 miles.

Boundary Reviews

The Boundary reviews for the Bodmin, Bude & Launceston, Mount Edgcumbe and West Caradon Districts have now been completed. These reviews been ongoing since last November, and following District and GSL meetings, letters were sent to 237 leaders across the four Districts. The information gained from the meetings, and the responses of these letters has been assessed, and a formal report forwarded to the County Commissioner by the review team. Following this report, a presentation was made to the County Executive Committee on the 18th March, with proposals by the County Commissioner. The results of the County Executive Committee's decision has been made known to the respective Districts Commissioners, and more information will be posted on this website on 5th April.

St.Piran's Day Parade

Bodmin Town hosted a St.Piran's Day Parade on the evening on Thursday 5th March. 100 members of the 3rd Bodmin and 1st Castle Canyke (4th Bodmin) turned out to march with the St.John's Ambulance and Fire Cadets through Fore Street shouting 'Oggy Oggy Oggy' with the bagpipes and drums, and culmanated with singing Trelwaney before eating pasties; a great evening out !

Orienteering Day

On Sunday 24th January, two Scout Groups took part in the first 'Kerno Orienteering Festival' of 2009, at Lanhydrock Estate near Bodmin. The Orienteering Club (and no, we haven't missed a 'w' off the name) run one event each month, and attract hundreds of clubs and individuals along. Members of the 1st Castle Canyke (4th Bodmin) and 20th Torbay Scout Groups enjoyed trudging around the estate in brilliant sunshine, and made the best of a winter's Sunday.
